Features and Highlights

  • History and cherry blossoms
  • Peaceful cherry blossom viewing in the quiet precincts of the temple
  • Elegant moment at a tea ceremony room surrounded by cherry blossoms

When the Someiyoshino cherry trees that adorn the approach to the shrine are in full bloom, a pale pink archway leads you into the shrine grounds. Someiyoshino cherry trees also bloom beautifully around the statue of the famous film director Shozo Makino.

Once in the garden, old cherry blossom trees with a tasteful appearance attract visitors’ attention. They have a different flavor from the gorgeous cherry blossoms and remind us of the weight of history. Bordered by the tomb of Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, the garden is divided into the west garden centering on Fuyo Pond and the east garden centering on Shinji Pond.

The west garden is a pond garden with a bridge over the middle island, with Mt. On the north side, Seiren-tei, a teahouse favored by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, is built. The tranquil scenery of the teahouse and the garden is so beautiful that it seems as if time has stood still.
