Cherry blossoms at Ninna-ji Temple are known for their late blooming. When the cherry blossoms that herald the arrival of spring in Kyoto have begun to fall, the late-blooming cherry trees at Ninna-ji Temple are in full bloom, providing a finale to the spring season in Kyoto.

The Omuro-zakura grove, which stretches along the western side of the central gate, is one of the best places in Kyoto for late-blooming cherry trees. Approximately 200 double-flowered cherry trees are in full bloom, and their low height allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms right before their eyes.

Omuro-zakura with the five-story pagoda in the background is a sight that has remained unchanged since the Edo period (1603-1868), and its beauty is breathtaking. In addition to the Omuro-zakura, various other types of cherry trees adorn the temple grounds, including Someiyoshino in front of Kondo Hall and Yohkou-zakura in front of Kannondou Hall.

Omuro Flower Festival

The Omuro Flower Festival is held from March 23 to May 6. With a special entrance fee, the precincts of the temple are decorated with more gorgeous colors.

  • From JR Kyoto Station, take city bus 26 (approx. 40 min.), get off at “Omuro Ninna-ji Temple” and walk shortly.
  • Take Randen Kitano Line, get off at Omuro Ninnaji Station, and walk 3 minutes.
