What is Kyoyo Rendaiji Temple?
Eiyo Rendaiji Temple is a temple of the Chizan School of Shingon Buddhism, and is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. Later, in 960, Kanku rebuilt the temple and gave it the name of Jyosei-Rendai-ji Temple. The temple used to have 12 sub-institutions and was called ” Junibo” (twelve monasteries), but now only 3 monasteries remain.

National Treasure, Eka-enkei Sutra: Eka-enkei Sutra, a picture scroll from the late Heian period, is in the possession of Jo-ren-dai-ji Temple and is designated as a National Treasure. It depicts the Buddhist teaching of cause and effect, and is characterized by its vivid colors and exquisite brushwork. It is currently consigned to the Kyoto National Museum for preservation.
Tomb of Heian-period Buddhist priest Teicho: The tomb of Teicho, a prominent Buddhist priest of the Heian period, is located in the precincts of the temple. Sadacho was a Buddhist priest active in the late Heian period and created many Buddhist statues, including the ” Dream Hall of Horyuji Temple” and the “Phoenix Hall of Uji Byodoin Temple.
Precincts in spring when weeping cherry trees are in full bloom: Weeping cherry trees, designated as a national natural monument, are planted in Eirendai-ji Temple. In spring, the temple grounds are covered with pale pink flowers, creating a magnificent sight.

- From JR Kyoto Station, take the 205 city bus (approx. 30 min.) to “Senbon Kitauji” and walk 3 minutes.
