Daigoji Temple has been famous for its cherry blossoms since the Heian period (794-1185), when it was called “Daigo of flowers “. It is also widely known for “Daigo no hanami” (cherry blossom viewing), which Toyotomi Hideyoshi is said to have held on a grand scale with more than 1,300 people.
Daigoji Temple is registered as a World Heritage site as a cultural asset of the ancient capital of Kyoto. The five-story pagoda, a national treasure, stands tall in the precincts of the temple, making it a very popular cherry blossom viewing spot with its majesty and history.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi cherry blossom viewing parade
In Daigoji Temple, the “Toyotaikoh Hanami G yoretsu (Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s cherry blossom viewing parade )” is held every year on the second Sunday in April, in accordance with the “Daigo no Hanami (cherry blossom viewing)” event held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The temple grounds are always crowded with visitors every year, as Hideyoshi was a showy person.
The name given to the event, ” Ho-Taiko “, is an honorary title for Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

How to access
Subway and bus are the most convenient ways to get to Daigoji Temple.
It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Daigo Station on the municipal subway Tozai Line.
If you take the Kyoto Daigoji Line of the Keihan Bus, get off at the Daigoji stop; if you take Keihan Bus Line 22 or 22A, get off at the Daigoji-mae stop.
