Features and Highlights

  • Cherry blossoms related to Narihira
  • Narihira cherry blossoms bloom in the garden of Mikata Fugen
  • A popular spot for cat lovers

The highlight of Jyurinji Temple is the Naruhira Cherry Blossom. This 200-year-old weeping cherry tree is planted in the center of the garden of Mikata Fushin, and its appearance is breathtaking. It is also called “canopy cherry blossom” because it looks like a canopy of cherry trees when viewed from Gyohei Goten.

Sanpo-Fuken-no-niwa,” a superb spot for viewing cherry blossoms, is a small garden surrounded by a high corridor, a tea ceremony room, and the Goten. The garden was named “Sanpo-Fusen-no-Niwa” (Garden of Three Views) because the view from three different angles (standing, sitting, and lying down) gives different impressions of the garden. It is said that the view from the high corridor is the heavenly world, the view from the tea house is the real world, and the view from Gyohei Goten is the paradise.

The Shiogama site is where Narihira is said to have enjoyed the taste of salt baking. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of cherry blossoms and salt grilling.

Jurinji Temple is also a popular spot for cat lovers. The temple’s pet cat, “Jone” (序音), was even featured in the photo exhibition “Neko no Kyoto” (Cats in Kyoto). The temple also offers a handmade cat red seal, making it a favorite spot for cat lovers.

Otoe-chan, originally a stray cat, is very friendly and popular among worshippers. Many people come from far away to visit the temple just to see her.
